The Skull Club was the art space of David Lord, located at the corner of Spain & Rampart, in the old Temperance Hall building (1860), starting in 1999.
The top floor was mostly an open loft, 30x80 feet, with 16 foot ceilings and massive gallery windows.
It was built out with a bar, a performance stage, a sound system, a dance floor and lots of couches. Exhibits of many undiscovered local talents came through there; painters, singer-song-writers, bands, fashion shows and all manner of performance art. The Skull Club hosted the New Orleans Fringe Festival three years in a row.
It was all about opening up to new ideas and giving them a platform.
An alternative voice in a city driven by tourism.
In 2019 the building was sold, but the Skull Club has never really left, simply turning into a shadowy presence online.
If you were ever there and had that secret key dropped down to you, welcome back. I've missed you.
